Wild Backyard is immersive and engaging theatre for children ages 1 to 5 years old, where we invite our audience to become actors with us! With a focus on urban wildlife (jackrabbits, chickadees, squirrels and magpies) local to the Alberta capital region, Wild Backyard includes object theatre, puppetry, song, movement, dance, dramatic scenes, and inspiring opportunities to play. This is our first iteration of Wild Backyard that is open to the public, but only 20 children and their adults may attend each session. There is a beginning and end to the show and is roughly 45 minutes - 1 hour long, including interactive play time, exploring our interactive space, and playing with objects, actors, and other people in the room.

Caregivers and educators will join children in the experience.

When:Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Past Performances

Colour Wizards

Calling all wizards and fantasy folk! Join us for Colour Wizards, a child-centered interactive theatre production that invites littles from 1-5 years to explore colour and light through a vibrant fantasy world. The Colour Wizards adventure takes place in Red, Green, and Blue worlds and includes sing-a-long songs, imaginative play, and storytelling through our “whispers” puppets. The journey is about 30-35 minutes long and children are encouraged to follow at their own pace, with their guardians and educators joining us in the experience.

Water Wishes

Welcome to Water Wishes -- an interactive, guided play session for children ages 1-5 and their adult companions that takes place at MacEwan University's Aquatic Centre. In this immersive theatre experience, the children become the audience AND the actors! Each session includes 25-30 minutes of poetry, song, movement, and play in the teach pool. Up to two children can accompany each adult, who must join their littles in the water. There will be a beginning and an end to the experience, but afterwards, children and adults can continue to enjoy the pool.

This child-centred theatre experience is brought to you in by  Elm Tree Theatre, in collaboration with MacEwan Sport and Wellness and the MacEwan Office of Research Services.
